Billie Wayne Cunningham, 77 of Ewing, Virginia passed away on Monday, December 7, 2020 at the Tri-State Manor in Harrogate, Tennessee. Born on April 21, 1943 in Harrogate, Billie was proudly the youngest of the fourteen children born to Edgar Lee and Edith Williams Cunningham. Being the youngest allowed Billie to proudly and jokingly brag that they did not have any more children after him because his daddy told his mommy, “Edith, we finally got it right!” He was a member of the Indian Creek Missionary Baptist Church and had worked in Michigan for many years before returning home and retiring from England Corsair in Tazewell.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Marie McCarter, Ollie Cunningham, Charles Cunningham, J. Malcolm Cunningham, Lagretta Cunningham, Dona Monday, Joyce Hammac, George Cunningham, Joe Cunningham, Dewey Cunningham, Basel Leon Cunningham, and Barbara Ruth Ayers.
Survivors include “his lovely bride” of 28 years, Annie Ayers Cunningham of Ewing; daughters, Barbara Segaert and husband, Pete, and Sue Sterling and husband, Richard; granddaughter, Rebecca Perry; sister, Norma L. Fultz and husband, Ernest of Petersburg, Michigan; special next-door neighbor, Dorothy Farmer; special friends, Boyd Middleton, Greg Pendleton and Clayton Hatfield, Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many, many friends.
Billie loved everyone and brought a smile to people’s face. He spent his time visiting the sick, nursing homes, and funeral services for all those he knew. He was special and precious to a multitude of people. He never met a stranger, just friends he had not yet met.
Funeral services will be at 7:00 PM on Friday, December 11 at the Arnett & Steele Valley Chapel with Rev. Bryan Lord and Rev. Steve Moyers. Music will be by The Hawkins Family. Graveside burial services will follow at 1:00 PM on Saturday at the Dobbs Cemetery in Harrogate. Clayton Hatfield, Jr, Greg Monday, Greg Pendleton, Chris Mabe, Dennis Hawkins and Mark Fultz will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 5 until 7 PM at the Arnett & Steele Valley Chapel in Harrogate, which is honored to be serving the Cunningham family. Share memories, leave condolences, and sign the online guestbook at www.asvalleychapel.com.
